The culinary trip to Athens

In Greece you will not starve. In Athens you find everywhere bakeries that sell things sweet and savory. If you have the munchies for 1.50-2.50 euros you can enjoy a pastry with spinach, leek and cheese or eat a good sandwich meat, bacon and cheese.
We followed the recommendations of the forum participants Greek Nigella on good restaurants in Athens and we were not disappointed.

We ate at the restaurant called "Café Avissynias" located at 7 Rue Kinetou in the Plaka. It is the oldest Monasteriaki with its 20 year history. This restaurant offers Greek dishes from € 10, desserts from 6 euros. It takes 50 euros for 2 people for starter, main course, dessert and a glass of wine.
We were lucky to have a server who speaks at least 3 languages, including French. In this restaurant we were able to enjoy Typical Greek dishes. For input we ordered the grilled cheese "haloumi"
As entrees we enjoyed a delicious moussaka, spinach youvetsi an octopus with small pasta with tomato sauce (pasta shaped reef, they called "orzo"). A "youvetsi" is a deep round dish and where the meal is cooked. We ate sausages with lamb scented with cumin, coriander, served with sweetbreads. This dish is called "souzouvakia.

Another good restaurant was recommended to us called "DIA TAUTIA (Adrianou, 35, Monasteriaki) which lies at the foot of the Agora. There has been much appreciated input typical Greek: the tsatskiki (white cheese sauce, cucumber and garlic), mashed eggplant, feta with olive oil, diced tomatoes and feta to the olive oil, tapenade. Here we tasted the delicious kebabs (souvlaki) chicken or pork served with fries, "dolmades" (cabbage stuffed with veal and sweetbreads), lamb with potatoes cooked in foil, roast pork, a pastry with spinach and feta. A "DIA TAUTIA we serve the best baklava (made desert with phyllo, or the amades nuts, honey syrup) and the best cakes with nuts.

the square Monasteriaki vendors sell fresh fruit: we bought 1 kg of strawberries at 1.99 euros and 1 kg of clementines 1 euros. The fruit was delicious.

I recommend a bakery "Ariston" (at 41 Street Skoufa) located in the Kolonaki area, just opposite the church of St. Dionysios and 5 minutes walk from the Benaki museum. Here you can find a wide range of biscuits, rolls of chocolate, and cheese puffs. The pistachio biscuits are really good you can bring them with you because they keep long enough.

We visited the island of Aegina. It is 40 minutes by speed boat from Athens. The island has attracted by its port and its ships and of course its cuisine and local produce. Just behind the fish market is a restaurant that serves traditional Greek dishes and fresh fish. The prices in this restaurant are much lower compared to restaurants in Athens and especially the quality of the product is good, as the warm hospitality. We tasted the grilled feta input. As main course we ordered the grilled octopus and grilled skate, accompanied by a cold sauce with potatoes and garlic ("skordalia). This cold sauce is usually made using a mortar or a blender, combine all the ingredients: 6 garlic cloves, 3 cooked potatoes, juice of 1 lemon, 120 ml of fish broth, olive oil. The owner of this restaurant served us the wine he makes himself.

In the port of Aegina in the narrow streets you can find plenty of shops selling local pistachios: 12 Euro for 1 kg of salted pistachios. You'll find honey with pistachios (4 euros per pot of 450 gr), cream, vanilla or pistachio (2 to 6 euros pot) and various sweet treats. I enjoyed the candy and white chocolate with pistachio, dark chocolate candy and pistachios, sesame seeds are bars, honey and pistachio (13 euros per kilo). These bars have a name "pastel". These delicacies were purchased from a local shop called Moyptzhe "located in a small street behind the port.

In most restaurant where we ate, we had to gut a national drink - "ouzo". It is an alcohol anise served neat or with a glass of water. The taste is sweeter than pastis. Ouzo easily purchased in small and large surfaces.

On the drinks menu you find the Greek coffee which is very close in taste of Turkish coffee. The coffee flavor is pronounced. It is served with a glass of water.

If you like herbal teas, take the mountain tea (Tea Mountain).

If you want to eat an ice cream, head for the Calle 21, Aisopou (in the Plaka district, not far from the flea market). Here you will find a very good ice cream flavors varied: coconut, caramel, coffee, chocolate, brownie etc..

on Syntagma Square you will find a bakery that specializes in senile pistachios, walnuts and almonds. This pastry is called Karakoy Gulluoglu, it exists since 1949. You can eat ice. Grab a coffee and buy more cakes such as baklava and rollers "saragali.

I stumbled into a grocery store selling quality products with a wide choice. Here you can find honey, olive oil, spices, tea, sweets. The store is called "Delicatessen and Catering," it is 25 minutes by tram from Syntagma Square (stop Musson, line 4)
In this store I bought a bottle of olive oil, halva, oregano, tea fixtures.

But if you're a big fan of good tea, go to a small grocery store located just 5 minutes walk to the subway Monasteriaki (street or Voreou Protogenous).
The nice owner will offer you a wide selection of tea and spices. You'll find the vanilla tea, oranges, lemon, strawberry, jasmine. The name of each book is written in Greek but the owner will answer all your questions in English with pleasure.

If you do not have enough time to buy Greek specialties, do not worry, you can buy everything in the Athens Airport in the "Shopping Center.

Verdict: If you are as greedy as me, Athens is a must to taste Greek dishes.

Culinary Adventure in Athens

In Greece Will not you die of hunger. In Athens you'll find everywhere selling the Baker All Kinds of snack food. "If you are starting to get a bit hungry, for EUR 1.50 -2.50 you can eat spinach and feta cheese wrapped in puff pastry pies.

Before going to Athens, I asked Nigella’s Greek forum participants to give me some advice on good restaurants with an authentic Greek food in Athens. Two restaurants were recommended: « Cafe Avissynias » (7 Kinetou, Avissynias Square, Monastiraki ) and « DIA TAUTIA » (Adrianou, 35, Monasteriaki).
I wasn’t disappointed at all. To the contrary, I loved these two restaurants so much that I went there several times to taste different Greek dishes.
« Cafe Avissynias »is a small but lovely restaurant-bar located in the heart of the Monastiraki Flea Market. Here you can enjoy Greek appetizers for 6-8 euros, Greek main dishes from 9.50 euros, desserts from 5 euros. You can get a nice meal with a glass of wine for 25 euros per person.
The place itself is decorated in a lovely ancient style. The personnel are friendly. We were lucky to have a multilingual waitress who spoke at least 4 languages: French, English, Italian, and And English.
As main dish we ordered delicious creamy spinach moussaka containing fresh leaves of spinach, aubergines and minced beef. I enjoyed eating “youvetsi”: a dish of baked octopus served with orzo pasta in a tomato sauce. I loved orzo’s flavour in youvetsi as orzo performs really well when it is baked in casseroles with a good sauce.
I have never tried orzo pasta before and was quite curious about this rice-shaped pasta. I bought several packages of orzo pasta as food souvenirs from Athens. I have not cooked it yet but I am planning to make a traditional Greek dish of sausages which is usually served with orzo pasta. You can also use orzo pasta in salads, soups or in pilafs where rice is substituted for orzo pasta. Or you can also eat orzo plain with butter.

If you are a meat eater, opt for a traditional Greek dish called «souzouvakia ». We tried it at “Cafe Avissynias” and it was absolutely delicious. We tried lamb «souzouvakia” – lamb rolls in a tomato sauce served with rice.

Another good and nice restaurant which we also appreciated a lot was situated at 35, Adrianou Street, in Monasteriaki. "DIA TAUTIA" was one of the places I particularly loved. It is quite popular among tourists. It is located only 5 minutes away on foot from Syntagma (Syndagma) square, and even less from Plaka. I loved this charming area as you can find everything here: good restaurants, souvenir boutiques small retail shops and archaeological sites. If you want to take a cup of coffee in one of the restaurants on Adrianou Street, you can admire the ruins of Hadrian’s library, the ancient Greek and Roman markets, and the famous Tower of the Winds.

The restaurant « DIA TAUTIA » was also recommended by Nigella’s forummer of Greek origin. We enjoyed the lovely and friendly atmosphere of this place.
At this restaurant we enjoyed eating different types of Greek appetizers: “tzatsiki” (it is a creamy combination of yogurt, cucumber, and garlic served as an appetizer and can be left on the table as an accompaniment to foods throughout the meal. It can be eaten alone, as a dip, as a spread, and as a condiment. ), lightly spiced aubergine purée, feta cheese covered in olive oil, small cubes of tomatoes and feta covered in olive oil as well as creamy and a little bit salty olive dip. I’d recommend trying pork and chicken “souvlaki” at this restaurant which were really well cooked and tasty. These lovely skewers of meat were served with French fries. “Dolmades” were delicious: these are grape leaves stuffed with meat and rice. Lamb and potatoes cooked "en papillote" were savoury. Grilled pork was so tender and melting in the mouth. If you are a vegetarian, opt for a vegetable spinach and feta pie. At “DIA TAUTIA” you can taste the best baklava (Greek dessert of cinnamon, walnuts and honey and phyllo pastry sheets). I adored Greek walnut cake, its nutty texture of walnuts, dripping in sweet, aromatic syrup. I highly recommend it for those who love really sweet desserts.

If you want to taste fresh fruits in a winter period, go on Monasteriaki square where you'll find tradesmen selling fresh fruits: 1 kg of strawberries for 1.99 euros and 1 kg of clementines for 1 euro.

I also recommend a bakery shop called “ARISTON”, situated at 41, Skoufa Street in the district of Kolonaki, opposite Saint-Dionysius church, a 5 minutes walk from Benaki museum. Here you can find a vast choice of cookies, biscuits, chocolate rolls and cheese pies. Pistachio biscuits are really good: you can take them away, they will be easily kept in a bag for 2 weeks.

We visited lovely Aegina Island (also known as Egine or Egina) easily reached by speed boat from the central harbour at Piraeus. I adored our day-long visit of the island.

We visited splendid Temple of Aphaea (Efea) and huge Greek Orthodox church of Agios Nektorios.

But if you want to eat and buy some local food specialties, go into any of the restaurants along Dimokratias street, bordering the port. Here you can discover a variety of boutiques and buy food specialties such as cheap pistachios (a 1 kg bag of salted pistachios costs 12 euros).

Just behind fish market there are a couple of local restaurants serving dishes made with fresh fish. We were seduced by one of such restaurants where we eat grilled feta, grilled octopus, grilled skate accompanied by cold potatoes garlic sauce called “skordalia". This sauce was delicious; it has a puree texture and is made in a simple way. You need 6 cloves of garlic, minced + 3 boiled potatoes + jus of 1 lemon + 120 ml of fish stock + some olive oil+ some salt to taste. You can prepare it either by hand or in a blender by mixing all ingredients together to get a thick puree. But “skordalia" is a matter of taste. Some people may prefer a mild garlic taste, while others prefer a strong garlic taste. The owner of the restaurant was very welcoming. Even though he didn’t speak a word of English, we were easily understood. He recommended us a white wine which he made himself. The wine was dry but very good and went well with fish and octopus.

Just behind Aegina port you’ll find lots of boutiques selling not only pistachios but other Greek specialties: pistachio honey (4 euros for 450 gr), vanilla and pistachio cream (2-4 euros per jar) and different delicious Greek sweets. I adored white chocolate and pistachio sweets, sesame bars with honey and pistachios (13 kg per 1 kg). These yummy sesame bars are called “pastelli”. I bought these sweets in a local boutique called « Moyptzhe » situated in one of the small streets of the port.

In many of the restaurants where we eat, we were served the classic Greek drink “OUZO”. It is an anise-flavoured drink served after meal. It can be consumed neat or with water. You can find it easily in any of the supermarkets.

As all tourists, we wanted to try a real Greek coffee which I found a little bit strong to my taste but it smelled divinely good.

If you like tea and herbal infusions, try Greek Mountain Tea. Greek Mountain Tea is made using the dried leaves and flowers of plants found on rocky slopes over 1000 meters. That’s why they call it as “Mountain Tea”. I was told that this tea is quite popular in Greece, especially in a winter period for colds, respiratory problems, digestion, the immune system, mild anxiety, and as an anti-oxidant. It is also used as an anti-inflammatory and to reduce fever.

If you are a big fan of good quality ice cream, go in the direction of 21, Aisopou, Street (district of Plaka, not far from flea market). Here the choice of flavours is huge. I was tempted by coco, caramel, coffee and chocolate flavours.

On Syntagma square you can find a nice bakery named “Karakoy Gulluoglu” which exists since 1949. It is specialized in pistachios, almonds and nuts sweets. Their sweets are really excellent. You can also eat ice cream there. Take a break, make yourself comfortable and savour different sorts of baklava and honey-sweet rolls called “saragali” (similar to baklava).
I stumbled upon a nice supermarket selling different Greeks specialties. There you can find all sorts of honey, coffee, tea, olive oil, vinegar, sweets. It’s called « Delicatessen and Catering ». It is located at 25 minutes by tram from Syntagma square (stop Musson, line 4 of the tram). Here I was happy to buy a bottle of Greek olive oil, dry oregano, mountain tea and halva (Greek sweets made from sesame paste, nut butters and sunflower seed butter). In Russia we also know halva. When I was a little girl, I adored eating halva. My mom bought a big chunk of halva which we cut into small pieces with a knife. But in Greece you can find halva with various flavours, such as almonds, pistachios, nuts, vanilla. Now in Russia you can find individual sweets of 30 gr each made with halva and covered with dark chocolate. It’s a pure delish.

If you a tea lover, visit a lovely grocery store located at a 5 minutes walk from Monatesteriaki (I don’t remember the exact name of the street but it should be either Voreou Street or Protogenous Street). A very friendly owner of the store will propose you a large choice of tea such as orange tea, vanilla tea, lemon tea, strawberry tea or jasmine tea. The name of each product is written in Greek but the grocery store’s owner will answer all questions with pleasure in English.

Don’t panic if you didn’t have enough time to buy Greek food specialties while being on visit in Athens. The Shopping Area of the Athens Airport is full of delicious things to buy. There I was tempted by Greek Balsamic Vinegar in spray: the last thing I bought before boarding the plane and leaving home.

My verdict: go to Athens. It’s a nice place to visit, especially for those who want to savour traditional Greek cuisine as I did.

Кулинарное приключение в Афинах, или заметки on Greek cuisine

begin with, that in Greece you will not die of hunger, whether you are meat-eaters or vegetarian.
In Athens, everywhere there are snack bars, where You can buy something tasty snack of sweet or savory pastries such as puff pastry with feta cheese or spinach, or sweets honey and pistashek. Pie pastry is from 1,50 to 2,50 EUR.

Before going to Athens, I asked on the forum Naydzhily Lawson, you can go eat well in Athens. My question otkliknudos neskoleo members of the forum of Greek origin, which to me and plsovetovali couple of good restaurants with Greek smithy. Tips of us did not disappoint. We were pleasantly surprised by the pleasant atmosphere of the recommended restaurants and excellent cuisine.

first restaurant, which we visited was called "Cafe Avissinias, which is located on the homonymous square at street 7 Kinetou, area Avissynias, Metro Monastiraki.

Restaurant Cafe Avissinias " - A small but cozy restaurant, located on the square Avissinias, which sells antiques and all sorts of things. If you are lucky, your table will have the window, then you will be able to watch the passers-by who stopped and watched with interest or curiosity about the proposed products, whether it's furniture or utensils for different purposes. In my opinion they are selling quite unnecessary gizmos on, as they say, every reschaet himself, to get him this or that thing. We chose to focus on prochtnenii menu, which was attended by a variety of typical Greek dishes. Regarding the price, snack stand from 08.06 euro main dish from 9.50 euros, desserts from 5 probable. Over a dinner of 3 dishes with a glass of wine you will pay on average about 25-30 euros. Take the money and you will not be disappointed ordered dishes. The restaurant there is more than 20 years and has kept the original furniture and decorative accessories. On the walls - floral wallpaper in pink and purple hues. Staff - polite. We were fortunate to be obsluzhinnymi ofitsantom, speaking 4 languages: English, French, Italian and English.

This restaurant, we tasted a typical Greek dish called moussaka. This casserole eggplant, meat, tomato sauce and vegetables, with a golden cheese crust. We also ordered moussaka and spinach. It gave us a very hot, had to wait a bit to make it cool. We waited not in vain, moussaka was fragrant, delicate, with a pleasant taste of vegetables and meat and tender cheese sauce. We also tried the baked Osminov in tomato sauce, applied to the plate pasta in the form of rice.

These small pasta shaped like rice (slightly larger than the size of rice) are called "orzo". I never let them probyval before, but I liked them immediately its vkuskom, especially with tomato sauce. In one supermarket I bought 2 bags of pasta products to cook something from their home.

If you are a fan of meat, then order a traditional dish for nazvvaniem "suzuvakiya. This dish is like on elongated lamb cutlets with spices and herbs, it is served with tomato sauce and rice.

second restaurant, which I recommend, called "INSTRUCTIONS Tout» (DIA TAUTIA "), located on the street in 1935, Adrianou Street, near the metro station Monasteriaki and within 5-7 minutes walk from Syntagma Square. On this street is the set resitoranov and cafes, and shops selling souvenirs.

this restaurant otlitchny selection of traditional snacks. Try fresh cooked sauce, cucumber, garlic and yogurt (in Greek - ttsatsiki) hrustyazim with warm bread. Ttsatsiki can be served as a cold appetizer with bread or as a sauce for meat dishes. Try also Pumpkin caviar, cheese Fet with olive sauce, sauce of olives. As a main course I recommend you skewers of beef or chicken. The meat is soft and well-done. In Greek kebab nazfvaetsya "souvlaki". Usually the meat is served French fries. Another typical Greek dish, reminiscent of our cabbage rolls, called dolmades. We tried the "dolmades", made of wine leaves stuffed with beef and rice. Greek cabbage rolls were delicious, but in my opinion a bit solenovatami compared with our Russian cabbage rolls. I advise you to also try the lamb, roasted of potatoes in the paper. Meat ochenb soft and fragrant, and melts in your mouth. If you are a vegetarian, then order a vegetable pie with spinach and feta. All the main dishes that we ordered were very tasty. Navernoesekret all lies in the quality of products and the ability to cook. If you have a sweet tooth, like me, this restaurant you will be remembered svom desserts, and imeeno his nut "baklava". "Baklava" is made of thin dough, honey, butter, walnuts or almonds. She baked as a layer cake, which is then cut into squares. This dessert is sweet, since it is covered with syrup of sugar, water, honey and cinnamon. I tried baklava walnut and almond, but preferred the almond. I also pointed out that for my taste, I prefer baklava, which added not a very large Number of cinnamon, but otherwise overrides the taste of cinnamon nuts and honey. I think it's worth to try several types of baklava, to understand what you closer to your taste, the more so in Athens you will not be difficult to find baklava, it is sold in almost every cafe - snack bar. If you lyudite orezi as I do, then order the walnut cake. He also sweet taste, as it bobvlen honey and sugar, but it is worth it to try it.

After rlotnogo and delicious lunch, treat yourself to a cup of real Greek coffee. If you are a fan nastoschego, black, tart-tasting coffee, Greek coffee you'll definitely enjoy it. For my taste it choen strong, I had it dobavt a little milk and sugar.

If you like fresh fruit, then I recommend you go to the square Monasteriaki, where you can buy fresh strawberries for 1.99 euro per 1 kg or 1 kg of Mandarin for just 1 euro. Fruits are very sweet and fresh.

If you are a fan of cookies, then I recommend you shop, a bakery, which sells home cookies. This shop is located on the street, 41, Skoufa, District Kolonaki, opposite the church of Saint-Dionysius, and 5 minutes walk from the Benaki Museum. It's called "ARISTON". Buy it raznooroznogo cookies. My favorite - pistashevoe cookies. You can follow any buy 0,5 kg or 1 kg of biscuits, and cordial hohyaka you zavernet it in a beautiful box. Rasschitavyyte from 10 to 15 euros per 1 kg.

If you want to eat fresh fish, go to the island of Aegina, famous for its Temple Afai (5 century BC), rising to the top of the hill and the white church of St. Nicholas. The island is located 45 minutes from Athens on a speed boat (ticket price: 26 euros round trip per person). Port of the island is full of cafes, small shops selling local products: pistashki, vanilla paste, honey pistashkami and various other sweets and goodies.
For example, 450 gram jar of honey vym will cost 4 euros, vanilla paste from 2 to 4 euros.

If you stroll through the streets of the port, you will find plenty of boutiques selling as souvenirs, and local sweets. For pistashkami I advise you to go out Dimokratias. 1 kg of salt pistashek will cost you 12 euros.

If you are fond of sweets, I I advise you to boutique «Moyptzhe», which is located on one of the streets behind the port. Here you may buy Domagoj chocolate and sweets pistashevye that preparing itself boutique owner. Most of all I liked the bars of sesame seeds, honey and pistashek (13 euro per 1 kg). These bars are called "pastelli. Also try the sweet white chocolate and pistashek.

At the port there is a small fish market: you can buy fresh fish. We chose to go the restaurant where we tasted the fresh fish. Restaurant where we dined, seemingly no different from Do other print: a seemingly very simple, tables buzhazhnye tablecloths and simple instruments. But this is not the main thing. The main thing is that here you will enjoy good fresh fish. Boss restorn, spoke no English, but we found a common language with him, and he was very friendly and was happy to our parish, as now in Greece, winter, and almost no tourists. We ordered fried grilled octopus, fish ramp. We have been filed naivkusneyshy green salad, dressed with a delicate olive oil. As the sauce to the fish was served Greek cold sauce under the name "skordaliya. He prepared very simply: 6 heads of garlic, 3 boiled potatoes, lemon juice, 120 yl fish broth, olive oil, Salt and pepper to taste. Toss all of the products until the puree. Serve with fish or meat. Our lunch was accompanied by dry white wine, which was prepared by the owner of the restaurant. So if you have an extra day in the stock, feel free to otpravyayte Island Egin for new impressions local goodies.

Many restaurants in Greece you'll be served a traditional Greek drink ouzo. It is made on the basis of ethyl alcohol and various aromatic herbs, including which there is anise.
He served in aperitif, but most often after food.

If you yavyaetes lovers of good tea or herbal, I advise you to try gresky tea called "Mountain Tea", or tea, or rather the flowers and herbs are included in it, collected in the highlands at 1000 meters. Therefore, this tea and called the mountain. This tea is quite popular in Greece, Jehovah printmayut not only as a beverage but also as a remedy for colds, and respiratory problems, digestive problems, with a weak immune system, nervous, or as an anti-oxidant. This tea can also lower the temperature.

Greece slaitsya his ice cream. If you are looking to try morozhenogona dessert, I recommend you go out into the street in 1921, Aisopou, district Plaka. I'm sure you'll like this ice cream parlor that offers over 20 varieties of ice cream. Arrange in a comfortable leather chair, order yourself some kinds of ice cream and enjoy ! I advise you to try the coconut ice cream, coffee, caramel and chocolate.

I give you the address of another coffee shop, candy store, specializing in baking and selling honey and pistashevyh sweets. Zdesb authors find several varieties of baklava. Try honey rolls under the name "saragali" they taste like baklava. You can follow any responses here and have a cup of good coffee and enjoy home morozhenogo.Itak, write the name: "Karakoy Gulluoglu" (area Syntagma).

If you want to buy something from the Greek products, and in the presence svoyuodnogo time, then I advise you to visit the small supermarket at called «Delicatessen and Catering», which is 25 minutes away from the area of Syntagma, stop Musson, 4 th line of the tram. Here I states have a bottle of olive oil (I was advised take olive oil muddy green, just so it is considered good quality), dried oregano, mountain tea in packets (onprodaetsya or in packages, Libro in leaves), halva. I never would have thought that in Greece selling halva, Kotra I love since childhood. The truth Tsretsii halva is sold with different fillings, I also bought a tasteful pistashek.

little more about tea ... If you want to buy tea horoeshno quality, then I suggest you go to a small shop, located Outdoor Voreou or Protogenous, quite nedaleo from Monatesteriaki. Here you will acquisition tea with the taste of orange, lemon, strawberry, jasmine (4.50 euros for 100 grams). Despite the fact that the names of products marked in Greek, do not despair, gentle shop owner gladly answer all your questions.

In conclusion, I want to say that if You do not have the time to buy Greek prodkuty in Athens, then do not worry. Large and varied selection of products waiting for you in «Shopping Area» Airport. Before how to sit on samoelt, I do not uderzhadas and bought a bottle of Greek balsamic as a spray.

Here at this and ended nasche trip to Athens.

If you will have the opportunity to travel to Athens, then there is sehdit in order to see the Acropolis, the island of Aegina and enjoy a real Greek cuisine.
